Repeated nightmares after trauma fit the emotional-processing account: the experience is not being filed away. Imagery rehearsal therapy, where patients rehearse a different ending while awake, is a genuinely effective treatment.

And the sleep-deprivation evidence cuts the other way: people deprived specifically of REM sleep do not lose their minds. They show mild difficulties with certain kinds of memory, suggesting dreaming is useful rather than essential.

Practically: dream quality tracks sleep quality, and the things that damage sleep — alcohol, irregular schedules, late screens — also fragment REM. Alcohol in particular suppresses REM early in the night and causes rebound later, which is why dreams turn strange after drinking.
